Sustainability in Skincare, Pushing the Industry Forward

Sustainability in Skincare, Pushing the Industry Forward

As consumers we all make decisions that affect one another, our planet’s future and ultimately our well being.

In today’s world we are all well aware that resources are finite and the impact we have on our planet. As consumers we all make decisions that affect one another, our planet’s future and ultimately our well being. Sustainability by definition is the avoidance of depletion of our natural resources in order to maintain ecological balance, the ability to sustain. This means choosing products that have less of an environmental impact.

Sustainability

Sustainable values are what Acure was founded on, and they continue to drive how we make decisions as a brand. It is important that industries lead by example with sustainable practices, and that is why we have taken strides to reduce the impact our products make on the environment, from the formulas we create, to the packaging we use, and offsetting our carbon footprint.

Clean Formulas

We are proud to make products that are not only good for the skin but also for the planet. Our products are free from parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, formaldehyde, and petrolatum. We do not utilize any synthetic fragrances. Our formulas are all biodegradable. Last year we began utilizing upcycled ingredients like avocado oil in a few of our formulas. Upcycling involves taking something that would usually be discarded, in this case avocado pits, and deriving an ingredient from that, avocado oil, to be used as an ingredient.

Packaging

A large part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability has been the transition of our packaging. We made a decision to phase out using virgin plastic a while back, instead opting for PCR (post consumer recycled) plastic. We also made the choice to use FSC (forest steward council) paper for all boxes and outer packaging. All of our packaging components are recyclable. We even decided to go a step further and transition to aluminum! However, the decision to choose aluminum was an easy one, as not only is it the most sustainable option (aluminum is infinitely recyclable), but it is also more hygienic, and lets the user get the most out of the product. In addition to those sustainably-minded decisions, in the last year we have introduced more innovative sustainable options including:

  • In-home compostable materials (paperboard)
  • Dissolving sachets made from wood pulp
  • Biodegradable water soluble capsules

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

One of our biggest goals was accomplished this past April. On Earth Day 2024 we announced that we are officially Climate Neutral Certified. What does that mean? Well we worked hard to deeply understand our environmental impact, find ways to reduce it, and actively repair the environment. For this initiative, we focused on 3 areas;

  1. We calculated our carbon emissions
  2. We built a plan to cut our emissions
  3. We offset our emissions with carbon credits

We hope to improve on our goals each year and invest our credits in new projects that help push the movement forward and inspire more industry participation!

Future of Sustainability in Skincare

What’s next? Fortunately, the younger generations like Gen Z and Gen Alpha are motivated and demanding more from industries as consumers. They prioritize sustainability and shop their values, looking to support brands that also prioritize the health of the planet in their manufacturing process. This is great news, as it pushes brands to make conscious decisions when it comes to packaging and shipping, two of the most environmentally impactful aspects of the skincare industry. We will continue to build on our efforts to ensure we align with our sustainable values and help do our part as well as encourage others.
